A new interim manager will begin at a Portsoy care home on Monday after the latest inspection raised concerns. An unannounced inspection of Durnhythe Care Home on July 8 found residents sitting in the dark because staff had not thought to turn the lights on, simply “staring into space” or fast asleep in public areas due to boredom and a lack of stimulation. Aberdeenshire Council runs the home and vowed to “do better” after the damning criticism from inspectors.

Simon Stevens has confirmed a former GP commissioning leader will be NHS England’s permanent national director of primary care. Nikki Kanani’s substantive appointment comes 13 months after she was hired to the role in an acting capacity. Previously she was deputy medical director at NHSE, and before that was chief clinical officer at Bexley Clinical Commissioning Group.

The results of the Scottish Federation of Housing Association’s board director elections were announced this week at the federation’s AGM in Edinburgh. Martin Wilkie-McFarlane at Wellhouse Housing Association and Dena Macleod at Hebridean Housing Partnership were named executives for the City of Glasgow and Rural and Islands respectively. Meanwhile, Julia Mulloy from Scottish Borders Housing Association, Lynn Wassell from Clyde Valley Housing Association and Alana Durnin from Oak Tree Housing Association were named executives for Other Urban Areas.

The head of a health board at the centre of failings in maternity care at two hospitals has resigned following calls for her to consider her future. Cwm Taf health board said Allison Williams stepped down as chief executive on Tuesday. In June it was revealed she was on sick leave. It follows a damning independent review that described maternity services at Royal Glamorgan and Prince Charles hospitals as “dysfunctional”.
